Simon Kidston

Spear’s Review

When a rare 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR Uhlenhaut Coupé sold at a private RM Sotheby’s auction in 2022, it was Simon Kidston’s bid on which the gavel fell.

Acting for an anonymous private buyer, Kidston secured the car, considered one of Mercedes’ ‘crown jewels’ and one which has been referred to as the ‘Mona Lisa’ for its rarity, for a record-setting €135 million.

Based in Geneva, Kidston – who helped to establish the Brooks Europe auction house, which later became Bonhams – provides strategic sales and acquisitions services as well as restoration supervision to the world’s most prolific and influential car collectors.

Among them are the former president of Microsoft and numerous entrepreneurs and actors, including Nicolas Cage, for whom he brokered the sale of a Lamborghini Miura SVJ once owned by the former shah of Iran.
