A managing partner at London-based firm Russell-Cooke, James Carroll is among the more senior members of the firm’s family law team. 

While his work covers the breadth of family law disputes, he is particularly sought after by UHNWs for his expertise in complex, high-value financial cases, often those involving offshore assets and corporate structures. ‘What excites me about my work is twofold,’ he tells Spear’s. ‘I like complex law and enjoy having a proper conversation about what the law says ... and the people who are more fascinating than any law.’

Notably, Carroll was involved in the high-profile Ashby v Kilduff [2010] case, regarding the division of property following the relationship breakdown of same-sex cohabitants. Since then, his client base has grown to count Middle Eastern royalty, billionaires and family offices among its ranks. 

He is also known for his championing of non-court dispute resolution, including the one-lawyer model, as a constructive way to resolve disputes.
