Spear’s Review

This intimate school – there are just 700 pupils ranging in age from 2 to 18 – provides a truly international education on the island of Malta for the local population and visitors finding a foothold in the European Union.

St Edward’s has steadily grown from its origins in an old hospital in 1929, developing into a handsome campus complete with extensive sports facilities, science labs, boarding houses and a chapel.

The school follows the academic principles of ‘thinking, understanding and learning’ to ensure that each pupil receives the skills he needs to succeed. It has been announced that, from September 2025, St Edward’s will transition from a boys-only school to a fully co-educational model, with the change set to be phased in gradually.

Head teacher

Nollaig Mac an Bhaird has been headmaster at St Edward’s since 2015. He previously held roles at schools in the Netherlands, and holds degrees from Trinity College Dublin and the University of New Hampshire.

Admissions

The admissions process at St Edward’s begins with completion of an application form.
