Emily Todhunter
Spear’s Review
A bright and buzzy studio in Chelsea is home to Todhunter Earle, a defining figure in modern British interior design for almost four decades.
Emily Todhunter founded the practice in 1988 and was joined by Kate Earle 10 years later. The two designers maintain their own teams – around 20 people in total – but are united by their sense of style. ‘We’re big enough to cope with anything, small enough to care,’ Todhunter tells Spear’s.
Homes across some of the best areas of London have benefited from Todhunter Earle’s eye for simplicity and harmony. The studio’s designs can also be found in UK country estates (a recently completed project involved a large shooting estate in Wiltshire), as well as in ski chalets and yachts, and sunny villas further afield.
‘Our job is very psychological,’ says Todhunter. ‘Part of being a designer is about reading the minds of the people we work for, and understanding how they want to feel on the day that they walk into their (newly decorated) home.’
