Níall McLaughlin

Spear’s Review

Níall McLaughlin, principal of his eponymous architecture firm, doesn’t specialise in a particular type of design, but in ‘high-quality architecture’.

Such an ethos is more important than working in any specific style, McLaughlin tells Spear’s: ‘We hope each project will be an original interpretation of the client, site, brief and budget.’ He works closely with clients on bespoke residential and commercial projects, with a speciality in the inventive use of building materials

His work on Saltmarsh House, completed in 2022, is exemplary of the firm’s sustainability and environmental considerations. The home, overlooking Isle of Wight marshland, comprises a delicate steel frame and lightweight roof – materials that complement the colours of the surrounding landscape.

McLaughlin is a Royal Academician in architecture, holds professorships at UCL and counts the 2022 RIBA Stirling Prize among his numerous accolades. In early 2026, in recognition of his body of work and lasting contribution to the field, he received the RIBA Royal Gold Medal for Architecture.
