James Gorst

Spear’s Review

Self-described ‘classic Modernist’ James Gorst’s two favourite buildings are Mies van der Rohe’s Modernist masterpiece Villa Tugendhat and Bramante’s High Renaissance Tempietto in Rome. ‘They are both such fascinating expressions of what architecture can be,’ he says.

His own aesthetic favours ‘luxurious but austere’ works ‘with a highly crafted quality to interiors’. Projects include the award-winning Hannington Farm in Northamptonshire and the refurbishment of a Georgian townhouse on London’s Lamb’s Conduit Street.

Perhaps no surprise, then, that he is a past winner of the BD Individual House Architect of the Year Award, and his firm, James Gorst Architects, has received a number of plaudits, including several RIBA awards in 2024 for the New Temple Complex in Hampshire.
