Philip Mould

Spear’s Review

‘Art sleuth’ Philip Mould OBE is celebrating over 30 years in the industry, during which time he has made a name for himself uncovering lost art pieces, including some of Gainsborough’s earliest known works and a number of lost van Dycks.

As art adviser to the Palace of Westminster for over 20 years, he hunted down some major works, which led to him receiving an OBE in 2003.

Regarded as one of the world’s leading experts on British portraiture, Mould continues his work with private collectors and institutions, advising on all aspects of conservation and restoration. He tells Spear’s that he has developed two areas of particular specialisation: Tudor art and Modern British art (1920–1950).

Mould is also known for presenting the award-winning art programme Fake or Fortune? on BBC One. As of 2025, it has been renewed for its 13th season.
