Zurich-based Thomas Reinshagen is an independent art adviser who provides advice relating to the sale and acquisition of artworks, drawing on a strong network of auction houses, galleries and valuations experts to serve a client base of private collectors, family offices and institutions.

A former senior director at Sotheby’s, Reinshagen has a particular focus on Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary art, and stresses that authenticity and trust remain fundamental when facilitating art transactions.

He tells Spear’s that, in his view, investors should not view art as a traditional asset class: ‘Art doesn’t pay a dividend.’ That said, he maintains there are excellent returns to be made on blue-chip artists, adding that the emotional value of art must not be understated. ‘You can’t look at an ETF or a stock at home, but you can look at a wonderful artwork that brings you joy. That is value, but it is not financial value.’
