When Spear’s first met Rebecca Cockcroft in a book-lined room at her office, it was a relief that it was an interview and not a negotiation. Cockcroft’s expression remained inscrutable during the early exchanges; one suspects opponents often find themselves giving away rather too much, rather too quickly.

Cockcroft, an alumna of Payne Hicks Beach and Penningtons Manches Cooper, heads the family team at Fladgate, where she is using her two decades of experience to build the firm’s HNW service offering. ‘Our team is going from strength to strength and we are making an impression on the market,’ she says. 

As one of the UK’s leading divorce lawyers, Cockcroft describes her approach as robust but sensitive. ‘I think you’ve got to be quite firm with your clients,’ she says. ‘Emotions run very high, and you need to persuade a client to focus on the big picture and the end result, not pyrrhic victories along the way.’
