Hinduja Family

Spear’s Review

The Hinduja family, the dynasty behind the  Hinduja Group, tops the 2025 Sunday Times Rich List with a fortune of £35 billion.

The firm has its beginnings in a business founded by Parmanand Hinduja in 1914. It now employs over 200,000 people globally and has interests spanning healthcare, banking, communications, real estate, the media and the hospitality industry.

However, the family faces a period of instability following the recent deaths of two of Parmanand’s four sons – and former co-chairs of the business – Srichand, who died in 2023, and Gopi (known as G.P.), who died in 2025.

The succession challenge is further complicated by legal action in Switzerland, where G.P. and Srichand’s brother Prakash, his wife Kamal and their son Ajay, as well as Ajay’s wife Namrata, were handed prison sentences for exploiting staff who had been brought over from India to work at their Geneva villa.

The fourth brother, Ashok, runs Hinduja Group operations across India, including truck maker Ashok Leyland.

Other key members of the family include G.P.’s sons Sanjay and Dheeraj, who have worked within the family businesses for decades. This generation of the family has been integral to the development of new hospitality and property ventures.

The 2023 opening of the long-anticipated hotel and residences at the Old War Offices on Whitehall – the first Raffles venture in London – held a special resonance for the clan, and not just because it was close to the family’s home on Carlton Terrace. Sanjay Hinduja previously told Spear’s that it represented an important ‘legacy’ project for them. ‘We wanted to create a legacy in London. That was the dream of my father and his brothers – to leave a legacy behind,’ he said.

In recognition of the family’s extraordinary transformation of the landmark into the five-star Raffles London at The OWO, Spear’s awarded G.P. Hinduja & Family the Entrepreneur of the Year honour at the 2023 Spear’s Awards.
