Spear’s Review

As the professional body for solicitors in England and Wales, the Solicitors Regulation Authority (SRA) sets the rules of conduct for some 170,000 practising solicitors.

Leading the body since 2014, Paul Philip describes his role as maintaining an up-to-date regulatory model for an ever-evolving commercial legal sector. More recently, the SRA has also led an in-depth review into the use of so-called SLAPPs (strategic lawsuit against public participation).

Having looked into the practices of 25 unnamed City firms, the regulator stressed that it found ‘good practice’ on the whole, whilst also identifying areas where firms ‘needed to do better’.

A barrister by trade, Philip previously served as the chief operating officer of the General Medical Council, where he worked for over a decade.
