Spear’s Review
Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) is Malaysia’s premier residential school for boys aged 12 to 17. It is one of only two boarding schools in the country that is under royal patronage, and it has been referred to as the ‘Eton of the East’ by some commentators.
The main building was built in 1910 in a pseudo Greco-Roman architectural style, and looks out over the school’s playing fields, where pupils frequently partake in sports such as hockey, volleyball, tennis, rugby and basketball. If outdoor pursuits are not appealing, then MCKK has many clubs and co-curricular societies on offer, including robotics, the UNESCO club, the neuroscience club, the crime prevention club and the Arabic language society.
MCKK aims to create a new generation of students who achieve academic excellence, and who have sound leadership skills and a strong sense of individuality. The school is a member of the Global Alliance of Leading-Edge Schools, which is led by the Raffles Institution in Singapore.
Academics
Malay College follows the Malaysian standard curriculum, but also offers the IB programme to students, who achieve consistently high results; in 2024, one boy achieved a perfect score.
University and college destinations
With their consistently high results, Malay College boys go on to matriculate at some of the top universities in the world.
Head teacher
Mohd Shahadan bin Abdul Rahman has been headmaster of MCKK since 2020.
Admissions
As well as demonstrating academic excellence, students must be Malaysian citizens and have extra-curricular interests.
