Spear’s Review

The boys of Mayo College, a senior boarding school in northern India, are taught a design thinking model – think, make, break, repeat – so they are prepared to respond in an agile fashion to the inevitable changes of the future.

To develop an international outlook, students are encouraged to take overseas trips on exchange programmes to Europe, South Africa, the US and Australia. They learn about languages, sport and other cultures, and their visiting counterparts bring their different perspectives to the school itself. Nearly 30 per cent of students go overseas for higher education.

Head teacher

Lt Gen Surendra Kulkarni, an alumnus of Mayo College, served in the Indian Army for around four decades; parallel to his army career, he pursued academic interests. He is an economics graduate from Fergusson College, Pune, and was a post-graduate UGC merit scholar before joining the army. Since 2015 he has served as director of Mayo College; he also is a trustee of the Round Square organisation and International Boys School Coalition.

He considers education to be beyond the realm of academics and believes students should grow into responsible global citizens with a commitment to contribute to a diverse, inclusive, equitable mindset.

Admissions

Students take an online aptitude test designed by the school faculty, covering English, Hindi and maths. Thereafter, there will be an online interview with a panel of teachers. Applicants who advance through these two rounds are called for a personal interview, along with their parents, with the school management committee.

Feeder schools

Students come from schools all over India.

University and college places

With the school now affiliated with the Cambridge Board, students will be eligible to apply to Oxford and Cambridge from 2026.
