Spear’s Review

An extremely academic school, boys must pass a selection process that St Paul’s says is designed to identify boys with a natural flair for learning. Once granted entry they will rub shoulders with intellectually curious classmates who may well turn out to be the politicians and professors of their generation.

Despite its London location, the school is set in 45 acres of green space next to the Thames. Many pupils head off to Oxbridge or Russell Group universities or to those in the Ivy League.

Academics

98 per cent of GCSE results are grades 7–9.

90 per cent of results at A-Level are A* or A.

University and college destinations

According to the school, in a typical year group of around 200 students, between a quarter and a third accept offers from Oxford and Cambridge. In 2024, 23 per cent of pupils gained places at Oxford and Cambridge, while 6 per cent of students gained places at Ivy League universities.

Head teacher

Sally-Anne Huang, high master of St Paul’s School, has been in her current role since 2020; she is the first female head in the school’s 510-year history. Huang previously worked as head of James Allen’s Girls’ School in Dulwich, headmistress of Kent College, Pembury, and deputy head at Roedean School, Brighton. Huang read classics and English at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford.

Admissions

Those seeking entry to St Paul’s at 13+ are required to take the ISEB online pre-test and submit a reference from the head teacher of their current school covering their character, academic strengths and interests. The second stage of the selection process is two assessments – in maths and English. Candidates who perform well will be invited to an interview to meet with two senior members of the teaching staff. Those entering at 16+ will sit entrance examinations in their chosen A-Level subjects; those who perform well will be invited back for interviews with the subject heads or senior teaching staff in each of their chosen subjects and asked to write a personal statement.
