Spear’s Review
Christus nobis factus sapientia is the motto of Geelong Grammar School. While the motto is deeply embedded in a former headmaster’s ‘regard for truth and reverence for the divine’, the school as it stands today interprets the phrase to mean ‘enabling wisdom’.
In this spirit, its students are encouraged to foster respect for education alongside the heritage and history of Australia. The school’s indigenous programme, which has been in place for almost 20 years, supports local communities through the Yalari Scholarship.
Known to some as Australia’s Eton, the school is strongly tied to British educational traditions but offers an international curriculum comprising the IB programme and Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE).
Academics
The 2024 combined IB/VCE median Australian Tertiary Admissions Rank (ATAR is a number between 0.00 and 99.95 that indicates a student’s position relative to all students in their age group) was 84.70.
University and college destinations
According to the school, most graduates choose to attend university in Victoria, Australia, including at the University of Melbourne, RMIT University, Monash University and Deakin University. In past years students have also matriculated at prestigious universities such as Harvard, Princeton, Stanford, Yale, Cambridge and Oxford.
Head teacher
Principal at Geelong Grammar School since 2018, Rebecca Cody has 20 years of teaching and leadership experience, gained through work at schools in Tasmania, Western Australia, New Zealand and Victoria. She has a Bachelor of Education from the University of Tasmania.
Admissions
Geelong Grammar welcomes applications into all year levels at any time of the year, and from the birth of a child. Following completion of an online enrolment form and submission of documentation such as school reports, applicants will be scheduled for an interview.
