Spear’s Review
Paul Abberley arrived at the helm of Charles Stanley in 2015, tasked with reviving the fortunes of a one-time City powerhouse then perceived — at least going by its stagnant share price — to have been resting on its laurels.
Under Abberley’s leadership, the 250-year old wealth manager (first listed on the London Stock Exchange in 1852) found its stride again. Within two years, key metrics – assets under management and core business revenues – were moving firmly in the right direction.
This turnaround did not go unnoticed. In 2021, the money manager was the subject of a successful takeover bid from Raymond James: the US wealth management powerhouse. At the time of the deal, Charles Stanley counted some 95,000 clients with £25 billion of assets under management.
