Uppingham School was founded in 1584 and is one of the oldest independent schools in the UK. Located in the town of Uppingham in Rutland, it has a rich academic tradition paired alongside a broad curriculum of 26 subjects at A-Levels.

The school is known for its excellent facilities, including modern science, arts and sports buildings. It also offers a wide range of co-curricular activities for students interested in sports, drama and music, allowing students to develop their talents outside the classroom.

With a strong sense of community and tradition, Uppingham provides a well-rounded education for students, helping them excel academically and personally.

Head teacher

The current headmaster of Uppingham School is Dr. Richard Maloney, who took up the role in 2016. Dr. Maloney has a strong academic background, holding a degree in Theology from the University of St Andrews and a doctorate from King's College London. Before joining Uppingham, he was headmaster of St Bede's School Trust Essex. His leadership style is characterised by a focus on academic rigour, personal development, and fostering a supportive environment.

Admissions

For entry at age 13, candidates take an entrance exam covering subjects like English, Maths, and Verbal Reasoning. For Sixth Form entry, applicants are assessed based on their GCSE results and may be asked to attend an interview. The interview process evaluates both academic potential and personal qualities, including extracurricular interests and character.

Uppingham seeks students who demonstrate academic promise, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to contribute to the school community.
