Spear’s Review

An IB world school on the outskirts of Vienna, Amadeus is dedicated to unlocking young people’s potential, and has a core ethos of academic excellence while nurturing talent in music, dance and the arts. When describing the school, head teacher Karen Ball says: ‘Our approach combines academic rigour with creativity, innovation and a strong focus on values.’

The school is renowned for its integrated music and arts academy, where classes are taught by those at the forefront of their industry, and offers the IB career-related programme focused specifically on music.

Full boarding is available from grade 6 (age 11), and boarding students can expect a fun and enriching experience in a state-of-the-art facility with multiple gathering areas and a panoramic view of the European city’s skyline.

Head teacher

Originally from Canada, Karen Ball has been the head of school at Amadeus since 2025, having previously served as head of the secondary school and deputy head of school. She holds a doctorate in educational science from the University of Vienna and was previously deputy head of school at Nobel Algarve British International School in Portugal.

University and college destinations

Students matriculate at universities around the world, including, unsurprisingly, schools that specialise in music, such as The Juilliard School, Berklee College of Music and the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna.

Admissions

The online application includes submission of documentation that includes school academic reports and recommendations. There is an option to attend a trial day at the school, or a trial stay at the boarding house. All students attend an interview, while older students also take an admissions test.
