Sarah Green of Michelmores has an increasingly international client base and particular strength in asset protection and clients with established family wealth.

She said: ‘Prenups, postnups and cohabitation agreements for unmarried couples are predominantly about protecting intergenerational wealth. Often we will get clients where the parents are driving this as part of their own estate planning, recognising that if they’re about to pass money down the generations, they very much want it to to stay there rather than risk it being effectively split in two.’

Conscious that many divorces can be completed without any intervention from lawyers at all, Green concentrates on contentious matters. She said, ‘In the majority of our cases, as well as the complexity of assets we’ve got complexity of characters – personality types, issues of controlling coercive behavior, financial abuse – and in those cases mediation is not appropriate. You will find that any mediator worth their money and experience will refuse to take that on.’ Green looks to private FDRs to fill the gap of the public courts.
