Chris Willis Pickup

After spending time at the Charity Commission, Chris Willis Pickup is now a partner at Mishcon de Reya, working with charities and individual clients on philanthropy-linked legal matters.
Asked what his clients typically come to him for, Pickup describes three situations. In the first, the client is a trustee of their own or another charity, something has gone wrong and they would like help. In the second, they would like to do something charitable but are not sure of the ideal structure or jurisdiction. In the third, the client wishes to make a grant and wants to craft the agreement so they have influence over how it will be spent, but not so much that they lose the tax relief related to charitable giving.
Pickup advises Mishcon’s international clientele about all aspects of charity law, using the firm’s excellent private client team to work on financial and tax aspects. He says, ‘We’re involved with the donors, but also with the structures that are put in place to facilitate giving from the community.’
