Jonathan Hopper

After 27 years of frontline experience in the property industry, Garrington boss Jonathan Hopper is well respected for his ability to ‘surprise and delight’ clients. He tells Spear’s his firm ‘excels’ in sourcing and acquiring high-value property which exceeds a client’s expectations and requirements, while still delivering excellent value for money. ‘My overarching principle is to add value and enrich the purchasing process at every possible opportunity,’ he says. That means knowing exactly what a client wants, but also providing clarity and confidence at each stage of the transaction. ‘I apply high levels of emotional intelligence to my work and always take time to understand client requirements before recommending a carefully considered strategy.’

After a tumultuous year for the sector and wider economy, he remains cautiously optimistic. Hopper has a track record for making the most of times of uncertainty. In the midst of the last big recession, he made the pivotal decision to lead a management buy-out of Garrington, driven by a deep belief in the strength of the team and its brand.

‘Garrington has since grown exceptionally, to become the largest UK buying agency, with coverage from Scotland to Cornwall,’ he says. ‘We’re very proud to have some of the most talented and experienced property finders in the UK working within the firm.’

After twelve years heading up the firm, Hopper still remains fully involved in a select number of client matters, including acquisitions. He successfully completed the year’s highest-value residential sale in the Eastern region, with Hopper’s client triumphing in a competitive bidding situation before exchanging within five working days.

Keen not to rest on his laurels, Hopper has used his time away from the desk to complete leadership programmes at Cranfield Management School and an MBA at Ashcroft International Business School in Cambridge. He also remains extremely passionate about raising professional standards within the buying agent sector. As well as being the first buying agent to join the board of The Property Ombudsman, he was heavily involved in creating the industry’s code of conduct. More recently, he has also advised on the foundations for the government’s planned Regulator of Property Agents.

He is a former council member of the Association of Relocation Professionals and represents buying agents on the Propertymark board – the membership organisation for UK property professionals. He also regularly provides market insights to publications including the Financial Times, the Sunday Times and Bloomberg.
