Spear’s Review
Alex Scott is synonymous with family business.
He was chairman of Applerigg, a family-owned concern that traces its roots back to a financial services group established in 1903 by his great-grandfather. He also founded Sandaire, an international multi-family investment office that was acquired by Schroders in 2020. He is joint life president of the Institute for Family Business (UK) – now Family Business UK – and has held roles with the International Federation of Family Offices and the Family Business Network.
Scott, who once told an interviewer that it has become a ‘hobby’ of his to ‘look at people of my age and older, to see how they handle stepping-off,’ has himself stepped down from several roles in recent years, but he remains a trustee of Grosvenor, the property group which manages the fortune of the Duke of Westminster and his family.
Scott read PPE at Oxford (Exeter College) and holds an MBA from IMD, Lausanne. He was appointed by the King as His Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant of the County of Cumbria in April 2023.
