MASECO Private Wealth

MASECO PRIVATE WEALTH is a pioneer and industry leader at providing wealth management services to Americans living in the UK and offshore trusts with US beneficiaries.

Our MASECO Institutional business also arranges custody and manages portfolios for other wealth management firms with US clients. We are independently owned and currently manage in excess of $1.95bn (as at 15 October 2020) for more than 700 families with our team of over 65 people.

Our firm focuses on helping HNW American families who have lived in the UK for at least 5 years and expect to stay for the foreseeable future with their wealth management needs. We are experts in managing portfolios for US families and have access to investment strategies that are designed to be compliant with both tax and regulatory requirements. We also focus on advanced financial planning and charitable gifting strategies that consider both US and UK (or European) taxes.

Josh Matthews and James Sellon, co-founders and managing partners, started their wealth management careers with Salomon Smith Barney (SSB) and together founded the US expat desk in 2001 following SSB’s merger with Citibank. After significant non-domicile tax law changes in the UK in 2008, Josh and James founded MASECO UK and then MASECO Switzerland in 2009. MASECO established an affiliated asset management business and a Hong Kong office in more recent years.

1) Unbiased, tax-efficient and platform-agnostic advanced financial planning advice. We seek to structure clients’ assets so that they are income tax- and estate tax-efficient in both the US and UK. We also focus on helping clients so their charitable gifting strategies are also taxefficient in both jurisdictions. We can arrange custody with custodians in multiple jurisdictions so that they are tax-efficient and cost-efficient for cross-border and global families.

2) Cost-effective, tax-efficient, evidence-based investment strategies. Our investment approach is founded on academic rigour.

3) A client-centric service team with long-term team members, continuity of service and an extensive external expert network. Client service is key for client retention, client satisfaction and new business referrals Our clients have lauded us with a high Net Promoter Score of 91% YTD and every year refer friends and colleagues to us.

Following the launch of MASECO, the team worked with US fund management companies to achieve UK reporting status for US mutual funds for the first time, which is integral for US taxpayers living in the UK for tax-efficiency purposes. In 2009, MASECO won a PAM award in recognition of this achievement. A few years later, when the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) was looking to restrict the promotion of UCIS in the UK, MASECO worked with the FCA to make US mutual funds exempt from the new UCIS promotion rules. In 2016, award-winning MASECO Asset Management (an affiliate) was established to manage investment vehicles which enable our clients to gain access to the alternative credit asset class.

MASECO uses a consultative approach when working with clients, most of whom are self-made and want to be involved with how their wealth is being managed. MASECO is also a B Corporation UK Founding member and was the first UK B Corporation in the financial services industry. B Corporations are businesses that meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparencyand legal accountability to balance profit and purpose. When we were first certified in 2013, there were only a few other B Corps in the country.

MASECO makes donations to certain nominated charities each time a new client is onboarded. The firm is also the lead sponsor of the LondonSports baseball and softball league and organizes the popular 4th of July annual Charity Softball Match attended by players from most US/UK accounting, estate planning and wealth management firms.
