Simon Ross is Seddons’ managing partner and a partner within its residential real estate arm, described as a ‘proactive, problem-solving safe pair of hands’ by the firm. He is known for his straightforward and approachable manner. ‘Clients appreciate the lack of legalese, and I do not try and bamboozle with complicated legal jargon,’ he says. It’s a refreshing approach, and the lawyer says he much prefers direct, face-to-face interactions to being an adviser who ‘hides behind words’.
‘Most important is placing the client at the heart of every decision we make,’ Ross adds. His diverse clientele includes entrepreneurs, SMEs, start-ups, scale-ups and HNW individuals. ‘I have had the pleasure of working for families across three generations and will hopefully continue to work with future generations. While a matter may be transactional, the relationship does not have to be.’
Ross is always more than happy to provide advice and guidance in both personal and professional issues. ‘It’s not just about billable hours,’ he stresses. ‘A good lawyer can stay with you for a lifetime, which is why you should feel comfortable with whomever you decide to go with.’
The lawyer has over 30 years’ experience in the residential field and an insider’s perspective of the UK’s real estate market, courtesy of the long-established relationships he maintains with agents, developers and lenders. This means he is not only a seasoned property lawyer, but also a trusted adviser who knows what it takes to secure successful outcomes for clients.
Seddons was founded in 1988, on the back of the merger of specialist media practice Woolf Seddon and the commercial practice Roscoe Phillips. Since then it has evolved into a private client specialist, having added a notable number of key specialisms and capabilities. The firm joined with B D Laddie in 2016, further fortifying its private client offering.
While the 2020 pandemic may have posed challenges for his team, Ross led the firm to adapt, using technology and expand its practice further with senior hires across the areas of employment and corporate law to form the Commercial Group. ‘We’re a full-service firm,’ Ross says. ‘This group pulls together the truly commercially minded talent we have, for the benefit of our clients.’
Seddons has, in recent years, built up ‘a substantial network’ in the Middle East, particularly within the UAE. ‘We have proven to ourselves that if you adapt, you can continue to create opportunities,’ he says. But a shift to growth shouldn’t water down existing values, he stresses.
‘We still hold the same values around looking after clients’ needs, both personal and commercial, and dealing with all aspects of life.’
