Spear’s Review
Andrew Bailey, governor of the Bank of England (BoE), is a creature of the City. He was his predecessor’s private secretary, chief executive of the Prudential Regulation Authority and chief executive of the Financial Conduct Authority before taking the top job at the BoE in March 2020 for a fixed eight-year term.
He also chairs the Monetary Policy Committee, which sets the rate at which the BoE lends to commercial banks, a key tool in keeping to the government’s inflation target and a significant influence on the banking community.
Known for a more relaxed style than previous governors, he has still had to take decisive action at times, and is consistently under scrutiny given the UK’s persistent inflationary challenges and speculation about rate cuts.
