Spear’s Review
An experienced private client solicitor, Wedlake Bell partner Victoria Mahon has particular expertise in Court of Protection and elderly client work – including advising on applications to the court regarding deputyship appointments, mental capacity issues, powers of attorney and protection of assets for vulnerable beneficiaries.
Her practice also focuses on mitigating inheritance tax and capital gains tax for both UK and non-UK domiciled individuals, including lifetime gifts, trusts and tax-efficient wills. She has advised on charitable structures and other areas of philanthropy law.
Outside of her immediate case work, Mahon is a contributing author to LexisNexis PSL’s practice notes on lasting powers of attorney and issues relating to elderly clients.
Adviser Profile
Victoria’s expertise in the private client field is extensive; it covers not only general estate planning for high-net-worth individuals for the purposes of asset protection and tax mitigation, but extends to guiding clients with philanthropic aims on how to structure their charitable giving and setting up foundations tailored to their aims. Further, Victoria is a key adviser to vulnerable clients and their families who are in need of added support in protecting, and planning in respect of, their assets where there are concerns over mental capacity or financial abuse; this includes managing Court of Protection applications and advising attorneys under Lasting Powers of Attorney and Court-appointed deputies.
This holistic approach ensures that Victoria is a trusted adviser for her clients, in the UK and overseas, and their wider family, as well as to the trustees holding their family wealth and charitable structures, who she also advises. Victoria is often a key player in helping resolve issues for clients where tensions between families might run high or where there are beneficiaries with mental capacity related concerns, to offer sensitive and sound management of both the assets concerned and the family dynamics as part of the overall estate planning. Victoria is therefore often invited by clients to act as their attorney under powers of attorney, trustee of their trusts and executor of their estates.
Victoria is a frequent contributor to Charities Management – writing articles on charity law matters for the benefit of those who run charities – and frequently writes on topics surrounding mental capacity issues for various publishers.
Victoria is a member of the STEP Mental Capacity Special Interest Group and the Charity Law Association.
