Butterfield Group

BUTTERFIELD is Bermuda’s first bank, originating from the trading firm of Nathaniel Butterfield, founded in Bermuda in 1784. Originally specialising in trading Bermuda cedar, wine and dry goods, the business of the firm grew and became more sophisticated under the direction of the founder’s son, Nathaniel T Butterfield. Eventually, the company began establishing current accounts for its merchant clientele, and by the early 1800s, financial transactions came to dominate the daily business of the company.

In 1858, the firm was established as a private bank in Bermuda – The Bank of N T Butterfield. Today, Butterfield is an award-winning, diversified financial services group, providing a range of banking, trust and investment services to international clients from its offices in Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Guernsey, Jersey, Switzerland, Singapore, The Bahamas and the UK.

The Butterfield Group offers a full range of community banking services in Bermuda and the Cayman Islands, encompassing retail and corporate banking and treasury activities. In the wealth management area, Butterfield provides private banking, asset management, custody and personal trust services from its headquarters in Bermuda and subsidiary offices in The Bahamas, the Cayman Islands, Guernsey, Jersey, Switzerland and Singapore. In the UK, Butterfield Mortgages Limited, a prime property mortgage provider, offers bespoke mortgages for local and international HNW/UHNW clients seeking to purchase residential property in prime London and the south of England.

The Bank of N T Butterfield & Son Limited, is publicly traded with share listings on the New York Stock Exchange (symbol: NTB) and the Bermuda Stock Exchange (symbol: NTB.BH).
