Atlas Fine Wines
London, United Kingdom
A Master of Wine, Simon Larkin founded Atlas Fine Wines in 2010 after 14 years in the trade to advise private clients on their collections. More than a decade on, Atlas continues to grow, boasting offices in London and Switzerland, a team of 15 employees and a loyal client base, which includes a number of wealthy entrepreneurs. The firm provides a personal service to HNWs, ‘whether they’re building a portfolio for consumption or investment’. Over 90 per cent of sales are made one-to-one. ‘We get to know them, their tastes and aims, and tailor our advice to suit,’
Larkin has developed a very loyal following of clients, many of whom have built up impressive cellars following his advice. Having headed sales and buying functions in past roles, Larkin has a strong profile with growers and private clients alike. ‘We have had some outstanding references,’ he says, of recent years.
The secret to the firm’s success is perhaps the fact that Larkin is still so hands-on. He prides himself on his day-to-day involvement in the management of the business, where he splits his time between the areas of strategy, sales, buying and marketing. He explains to Spear’s why he has to be on the front line: ‘Fine wine should be accessible, it shouldn’t be hidden behind a lot of pompous language and bluff.’
Larkin is always a phone call away. It’s no wonder that clients ring him ‘several times a week’ to discuss opportunities. A number of clients see themselves as ‘Atlas ambassadors’, he says, a factor which gives the adviser ‘huge satisfaction’.
