Tim Maxwell is co-head of the art group at Charles Russell Speechlys LLP, specialising in contentious matters including fakes, dealer disputes and authenticity. He separately provides strategic advice on transactional issues and is noted for his diplomacy in resolving complex international situations.
Tim has long been fascinated by the art world, and began his career working on cases involving misattribution of Old Master paintings and provenance disputes. His practice has since grown to encompass all aspects of the art world, and he has a growing reputation in protecting artists’ rights and street art.
Over the past year – despite the obvious issues the Covid pandemic has caused what remains a ‘people industry’ – the art law practice has flourished. He has seen a noted upturn in cases involving cultural property and restitution, along with a developing intolerance of the art market’s long-standing desire for secrecy. He also highlights the stalled art finance reforms as a key priority if the UK is to remain competitive internationally.
Since lockdown, Tim has become been involved in various initiatives designed to help museums, galleries and art businesses who have been drastically affected by the Covid crisis.
Tim also has a significant practice in other luxury asset classes – particularly wine and classic cars. He notes that as the financial world has stagnated, clients are increasingly turning to more enjoyable and exotic assets, calling for expert advice.
