Profile

Rudy Capildeo

Description

‘I help my clients enjoy the objects they love,’ says Rudy Capildeo, co-head of Charles Russell Speechlys’ top tier Art and Luxury Law Team.

Despite the prophecies of doom, Capildeo has been increasingly busy during lockdown and sees no signs of it slowing. 2020 was always going to be a year of changing practices for the art market, with the EU implementing its anti-money laundering regulations and the uncertainty of Brexit gathering pace. However, Covid-19 has accelerated the market’s technological innovation, leading to a ‘proliferation of online-only fairs, thrillingly orchestrated auctions that have attracted old and new bidders alike and ruthlessly competitive tenders among the major market participants as demand outstrips supply.’

The strategic recruitment of Capildeo and Tim Maxwell last year has been a conscious effort by the firm to provide expertise that matters to their clients, differentiating them from their competitors. Charles Russell Speechlys’ international footprint – with offices in the creative and commercial hubs of London, Paris, Hong Kong and the private wealth centres of Luxembourg, Switzerland and the Middle East – has helped. ‘While we’ve all embraced video-conferencing, it still does not beat having “boots on the ground”, which has reassured clients.’

He expects the market to remain strong. ‘If Covid-19 has taught us anything, it’s to love our friends and family and surround ourselves with things that matter. If that involves a Banksy, a Ferrari 330 and a case of Romanée-Conti, who would disagree?’
