Kate Leppard

We did a lot of work in 2019 on our digital capability, and it proved invaluable this year when we went into lockdown,’ Kate Leppard says.

The reigning Spear’s UHNW Asset Manager of the Year spent much of March ‘hand-holding’ clients through turbulent markets. ‘I was more surprised about the lack of panic,’ she says. ‘I think in part it was because we were so proactive.’ It also helps that portfolios were ‘robust enough to weather the storm’. The pro-activity Leppard talks about extends to more than reassuring clients. There’s a new client app which she says ‘will allow us to give clients the information they want it, when they want and how they want it. Clients can use the app to easily contact us – and keep track of our latest thinking on markets and economics.’

Leppard joined Schroders (which bought Cazenove Capital in 2013) in 1990, after a short stint as a stockbroker at Quilter Goodison. She manages investment portfolios for large UK and international private families and trusts.

‘We like to ensure that we get to know our clients well, understand what keeps them awake at night and importantly understand what inspires them during the day.’ Leppard is clear about what her clients are looking for: ‘When it comes to HNW and UHNW families, the stability of the relationship is very important…You need a discretionary manager who is forward-looking and who evolves with time.’

With that in mind, the firm has started to ‘talk more loudly’ about its ESG and sustainability work, she notes.

While such themes have been a consistent aspect of Cazenove Capital’s core offering, Leppard says there has been a notable uptick in interest recently.

‘This time of lockdown has made clients reflect on what their needs, requirements and values are,’ she says. Cazenove Capital’s sustainable investment strategies enable clients to steer clear of harmful and controversial sectors, and use investments to positively contribute to solving the world’s problems.

‘We can help clients really understand the impact of their portfolios on people and the planet’ she explains. The firm looks at widely-disclosed measures such as carbon emissions but also draws on Schroders analytical tools to help quantify the social benefits of portfolios.
