Self-described ‘classic modernist’ James Gorst’s two favourite buildings are Mies van der Rohe’s modernist masterpiece Villa Tugendhat, and Bramante’s High Renaissance Tempietto in San Pietro in Montorio. ‘They are both such fascinating expressions of what architecture can be,’ he says.
His own aesthetic favours ‘luxurious but austere’ works ‘with a highly crafted quality to interiors’. Projects include Hannington Farm in Northamptonshire. He has also refurbished a Georgian town house on Lamb’s Conduit Street. Perhaps no surprise, then, that he won BD’s Individual House Architect of the Year 2017. His firm was also on RIBA’s East regional awards shortlist in 2018.
