No two days and no two clients are the same, says partner Sally Ashford, who heads up the Charles Russell Speechlys non-contentious private client team in Guildford.‘It may be the founder of a family business who’s suddenly concerned about succession issues, or an elderly widow who wants to ensure that her family are well provided for.’
Ashford, who began her career at Allen & Overy, specialises in advising HNWs and family business owners on estate and family succession planning, including inheritance tax mitigation and trusts.
She notes that the current world situation – in particular the pandemic, but also Brexit and possible changes to tax legislation – has focused clients on getting their personal legal affairs in order and thinking more than ever about wealth structuring and planning.
‘Quiet periods in the private wealth world appear to be a thing of the past,’ she says. Especially at Charles Russell Speechlys, which has one of the largest private client teams in the market, and is able to deploy experts on the whole spectrum of legal matters.
‘It is essential to take the time to understand your client, their family situations, their business interests and what worries them. Becoming a trusted adviser is not something that you can force ,’ adds Ashford. ‘ It comes from a genuine commitment to long-term relationship building.’
So when did she realise she’d become a trusted adviser?‘When a client phoned me to ask for my advice on whether he should marry his long-term girlfriend.’
