Jo Hawkins describes her job as ‘a mix of talking, empathy, shrewd planning and strategic thinking.’ As she explains, it’s all about ‘being able to provide sound, informed advice to people who are struggling – whether that be emotionally, or financially.’
And that’s just on the client side. When it comes to execution, she’s constantly having to evolve her approach, whether as a result of changes to the authorities, the law, or technology. The aim is simple: ‘ultimately securing clients on the other side intact and ready to move forward.’
It was early on in her 28-year career that Hawkins realised just how specialist family law is. After qualifying in Cambridge, she headed up the family division at one firm, before founding her own in 2001.
‘I realised that I could listen to people, hear what they were saying, create an environment of trust for them and follow through with strong, confident advice – which has led to many successful outcomes,’ she explains. ‘My client management skills are focused, and my ability to keep communicating with clients is valued.’
She believes in a choice of processes for her clients on how they want to conduct proceedings, be that arbitration, collaborative law, mediation or litigation.
A recent case saw her secure 75 per cent of her original offer to the counter party.
Clients tend to come by word of mouth, and represent a broad spectrum. ‘Our HNW clients are typically company directors, business owners, entrepreneurs, farmers, successful professionals based in the UK or abroad, and ex-pats,’ says Hawkins. ‘Generally, they ask for one of our team by name, as a result of reputation.
‘Often, we are recommended by clients who we opposed. This is a huge compliment.
‘The clients want excellence. They want attention to detail, focus, individual attention, choice, to be listened to, and for someone to be reassuring, confident and professional, while remaining human, and they should receive that level of care.’
A keen skier and gardener when not in the workplace, Hawkins is currently focused on the firm’s new offices in Oxfordshire and London. She’s pleased by the talent her firm is attracting, adding, ‘If you are interested in people and life, then family law is the obvious choice.’
