‘Never underestimate the power of staying positive and smiling – a good relationship between lawyer and client is crucial,’ says Shona Alexander. She has extensive experience in a comprehensive range of family law issues, especially complex financial cases (often international and business-related), marital agreements, child arrangements and issues relating to unmarried couples.
Over the years she has been involved with a number of different generations of families, ‘working pro-actively in planning – as well as reactively, when required’. This has often been as a trusted ‘family’ advisor; having dealt with family issues the relationship between advisor and client is established enough to assist on all other issues and put together the right team of experts to help with whatever issues the client is facing.
‘Being a trusted advisor is about being the person that a client can contact with an issue, however obtuse, and helping them to get resolution,’ she says. Recent examples include being asked to assist on a vintage sports car dispute, a major property transaction and a breach of contract case, as well as the divorce cases and pre- and post-nuptial agreements.
Formerly head of the Forsters family team before joining Charles Russell Speechlys in 2016, she has had big wins since qualifying, including Thiry v Thiry – where she acted for the wife against the ‘extremely difficult’ husband, winning praise from the presiding judge as to how the case had been conducted.
