Clare Armitage

‘UK tax and legal compliance has changed dramatically over the last few years, particularly for international clients. My aim is to help navigate these often complex and unfamiliar rules, anticipate issues and provide a successful solution,’ Clare Armitage tells Spear’s of her role at Wedlake Bell.

Newly minted as a partner in the firm’s private wealth team, Armitage advises both UK-based and international individuals, trustees, beneficiaries and their advisers on tax, trusts, estate planning and succession issues.

Armitage describes a key aspect of her practice as ‘knowing and understanding’ her clients, which means UHNW and HNW individuals and families, whom she advises on the establishment and use of trusts and other structures for succession and estate planning purposes.

She also often advises on global affairs. She’s particularly interested in the Middle East, having advised members of several high profile families on their UK tax and estate planning.

‘My UK client base also continue to keep me busy, including one particularly large family trust (circa £1 billion), which always has a number of complex trust issues as well as exciting projects in the pipeline,’ she adds.

She emphasises the ‘full service’ offering for Wedlake Bell’s private clients. ‘My clients often ask for me to be their key adviser, but private clients – particularly international clients– often require many different types of legal expertise,’ she says. ‘They do not always want or have time to deal with ten advisers and being able to deliver a co-ordinated, joined up response with the relevant expertise available at the end of a call if required is definitely key.’

One message from a client reads: ‘We could not do without her!’, which explains Armitage’s crucial role providing legal guidance with a practical approach. ‘She is a first class private client practitioner, and her knowledge is deep and wide,’ a client further observes. ‘She is a trusted adviser’.

Another testament to her relationship with clients is that she has recently been appointed to the board of trustees of a significant private charitable foundation at the request of family members.

‘It has been a thoroughly rewarding and humbling cause to be involved with,’ she says.
