Tom Elliott

Crowe UK tax partner Tom Elliott has over 25 years’ experience advising HNW clients and their families on all aspects of personal and business taxation as well as dynastic wealth. He is also head of London private clients at Crowe UK, one of the country’s top ten accountancy firms, leading ‘a group of highly talented and motivated individuals’ dedicated to private client work.

Elliott advises wealthy families, family estates and entrepreneurs, on the personal tax aspects of property investment. He describes his role as ‘helping clients formulate and implement a financial life-plan while always keeping in mind the “sleep at night” test. If advice leads to clients worrying about the consequences (for instance family dynamics, attention from HMRC or other), then my work is not yet complete.’

As a result his role is not as straightforward as you might think. ‘This role at times involves challenging clients’ thinking about their personal/family balance sheets,’ confides Elliott, ‘often starting with the question, “What is your wealth for?”’

Personal taxation, tax planning, capital gains tax, value retention, residence and domicile, property investment, and inward investment to the UK all fall under his expert purview. He says that his ambition for his clients is to become a trusted adviser. ‘This requires an appropriate time-investment in establishing strong relationships with clients and their other professional advisors,’ he notes.

Elliott, formerly of KPMG and Grant Thornton in Manchester, describes the pivotal moment in his career coming with his move to London in 2011 to work with the existing London private client team, to drive forward the business. ‘This relocation created a number of opportunities, both professionally and personally, including developing a key focus on the international private client market,’ says Elliot.

A Chartered Tax Adviser, he is an active member on the tax faculty private client technical sub-committee of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales. ‘I am privileged to act as a trustee on a number of client family trusts and charitable foundations,’ adds Elliott, who also describes himself as a long-suffering supporter of Leeds United and a passionate snowboarder.
