‘Fewer and fewer firms are able to offer what we offer,’ says Geraint Jones, who has over 26 years’ experience in tax. He says private clients’ affairs are becoming increasingly sophisticated, so much so that his main priority before giving advice is to ‘understand the full picture of their finances. Today’s HNWs are looking for an in-depth service that covers tax, trusts and estates, as well as a service where the technical expertise also comes with a personal, human interest.’
Jones leads the private client tax team at BKL, which specialises in high-level tax advice for HNWs and UHNWs, especially for property, non-domiciled and non-resident individuals – a specialism he developed over 20 years of his career. Additionally, he also offers expertise in offshore trusts and probate, as well as wealth planning services, which includes retirement planning and inheritance tax structuring. He takes pride in his team’s ‘high level pastoral approach’, which ensures that the term ‘trusted adviser’ isn’t just a marketing phrase but a genuine experience.
Clients are mostly international, with significant numbers based in the Middle East and the Far East, largely hailing from Dubai, Saudi Arabia, the US and Hong Kong. The adviser says it is important to make clients feel that he is ‘their ally, not just their adviser’.
He advises clients about their income tax, capital gains tax and inheritance tax, and creates bespoke solutions to improve tax-efficiency for people with multiple assets and sources of income. The firm, which focuses on ‘constantly evolving to reflect the requirements and needs of clients’, also offers cryptocurrency tax advice for investors.
‘Staying at the cutting edge of technology is very important, and we are investing heavily in this area to make our clients’ experience as streamlined and as easy as possible. Our HNW clients know that the level of professional expertise and personal care they receive at BKL can’t be found from our competitors, especially in specialist areas like crypto tax.’
Outside work, Jones is a member of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and writes annually for Tolley’s Property Taxation on the topic of overseas property investors. He wants readers to know that he particularly enjoys holidays in Southwest France ‘where the rugby is as good as the wine’.
