James Gladstone

James Gladstone is proud of what his team has achieved in an unusual year. ‘2020 has been a challenging year, but we adapted quickly and have focused on helping clients navigate this very uncertain period.’

Cazenove Capital’s wealth management proposition is very distinctive and sits on the broad shoulders of Schroders. ‘We understand what it means to protect wealth over the long term,’ says Gladstone. ‘We take the time to understand our clients’ circumstances and objectives and develop the right solution for them.’ His responsibilities include leading the department, chairing the innovation forum for wealth management, and personally providing wealth-planning advice to clients. This advice covers estate planning, investment structuring and asset protection, with his focus tending to fall on the firm’s larger clients.

‘While my role demands a high level of technical specialism in order to deliver against client expectations, I believe my real specialism and value lies in a detailed understanding of my clients, in order to best assist them in the effective management of their wealth,’ he says.

Cazenove prides itself on its high degree of tax and technical knowledge, combined with extensive experience of dealing with the challenges wealth can bring across generational and geographical borders. Over a third of the firm’s clients have created their wealth through founding and growing a business. In helping generations of owners and entrepreneurs, it’s built exceptional knowledge of the obstacles they face – and how to navigate them.

Gladstone tells Spear’s this puts his firm in a strong position to offer valuable counsel to clients considering the various planning routes open to them. ‘Given the uncertain political and economic times, it has never been more important to have a clear strategy for how associated risks are managed in the context of a family’s wider wealth, and how they wish to put this to use.’ The firm takes a ‘holistic’ approach, covering areas like investment structuring and retirement, estate planning and philanthropy, alongside preserving and growing wealth.

‘We must continually innovate and challenge the way we deliver our services to clients to ensure we surpass expectations,’ he adds. This is illustrated by the growing interest in non-financial returns on investment, with clients ‘increasingly demanding more clarity on the environmental and social impact of their investments.’

Both Cazenove and Schroders have huge experience in this area, allowing them to actively engage in discussions and help families achieve the impact they desire. ‘This often becomes a cornerstone for discussions at our meetings,’ says Gladstone.
