Helen Watson is CEO of Rothschild & Co’s wealth management business, which provides discretionary investment management services to wealthy families and charities. Watson has made it her priority as CEO to ‘put the client first in every aspect of the business’. This means lots of time spent with clients and empowering the team to use their initiative to make decisions that always seek to benefit clients. Clients come from all walks of life, and include filmmakers, tech entrepreneurs, foundations, business owners, academic institutions and families.

‘Our focus on exceptional client service has become even more important during the challenges that 2020 has presented. We are well-known in the industry for our strong client relationships and our low number of clients to each adviser – and this has stood us in good stead. When things are uncertain, clients value personal relationships more than ever and we’ve been proactive, upfront and at the end of the phone to talk things through to provide reassurance, which clients have really appreciated.’

Client retention is at 98 per cent, with three-quarters of new asset coming from existing clients and referral rates are at 55 per cent in the last 12 months, according to the firm. The relationship the firm has with clients is close and flexible, leveraging its considerable expertise across the group to provide innovative solutions.

‘We firmly believe in setting expectations with clients and being transparent about the risks and rewards they might experience. We build portfolios to cope with uncertainty, and these two things combined have meant that, reassuringly, our portfolios have largely behaved as we – and our clients – have expected,’ Watson says.

For example, when an UHNW family client recently switched to Rothschild & Co, in addition to changing investment strategy and reducing costs compared to the previous manager, the firm assisted with a number of complex tax and ethical requirements. ‘Working closely with their family office and legal tax advisers, we ensured that the family’s complex tax and investment management guidelines were accommodated and also set up a new relationship with an external global custodian, in line with the clients’ preferences,’ Watson explains.

Investing responsibly has always been central to the firm’s approach. ‘Because it’s the best way for us to deliver long-term sustainable returns, as well as being the right thing to do. Increasingly, our clients want to know that we’re investing in line with their vision of making the world a better place. We’re constantly striving to improve how we integrate sustainability in our investment process.’
