David Nelson

Tax hotshot David Nelson’s approach encompasses three overlapping elements: to establish trust, to think long-term and to solve clients’ problems.

Nelson joined Dixon Wilson in 1984, and has since acquired broad experience in advising HNW families and businesses on their tax issues, with particular expertise when it comes to advising landed estates, offshore trusts and UK residents who have retained a foreign domicile.

A partner since 1990, he has significant experience acting as a trustee and non-executive director, with clients in both the public and private arenas. Sectors include media, hotels and hospitality, insurance and training, while trusteeships include landed estates and other diverse business interests.

Even with complex international estates, Nelson prefers a straightforward approach. Whether working for an agile HNW or a landed estate, he says his role is to ‘establish the client’s exact wishes and objectives’ and, from there, to ‘communicate clearly and avoid all unnecessary complexity.’

Linked to the above, he maintains a professional and personal interest in how the British public sees offshore structures, which he fears are increasingly being presented as dishonest or fraudulent. As an experienced director himself, Nelson cautions against this misrepresentation, which he fears could drive entrepreneurs away from the UK.

Having previously served as senior partner of Dixon Wilson for ten years, Nelson currently leads a team which works closely with clients and other professional advisers across the firm’s two offices in London and Paris.

Reflecting on his decision to pursue private client work (something he regards as a pivotal moment in his career), he speaks highly of Dixon Wilson for its ‘interesting variety of clients’ and the highly talented professionals he gets to work with. The firm has also carved a reputation, he says, as a quick adapter of technology.

After nearly four decades in the business, he remains philosophical about his work, noting that a healthy dose of perspective is often beneficial to even the keenest of clients. ‘Tax and regulation isn’t the end of the world’, he adds, and ‘for most people life just goes on’. Whatever the intricacies of a particular tax case, it’s hard to argue with that.
