Nick Batiste

As managing director of Saffery Champness in the Channel Islands, Nick Batiste works closely with the firm’s management teams on strategic and operational matters in Switzerland, Dubai and the Cayman Islands.

He tells Spear’s that his approach is structured around three key principles: ‘I provide a director-led and proactive service that maintains continuity,’ he says. ‘That means clients get access to me when they need it most; that I build open and meaningful relationships with them; and that they get to speak to the same person throughout.’

Batiste currently advises a wide range of clients, both private and corporate, on the establishment, management and operation of offshore structures and the diversified asset classes held by those structures. Private clients include HNW families, entrepreneurs and intra- generational family trusts, often with assets and investments across numerous jurisdictions. In addition to this, he acts as a trustee and director to various companies.

‘I would describe myself as being well organised, timely in meeting deadlines, having empathy when needed, but also the ability to be open and honest, coupled with a no- nonsense direct approach,’ he says. ‘I set others and myself very high standards.’

Born and educated on the island, he joined the Guernsey office of Saffery Champness in 1992, working his way through the ranks prior to his appointment to managing director in 2014.

‘I started my career with a very different business to the one I lead today,’ he recalls, pointing to a specific period in 2001 as a defining moment for his career.

‘The business was surfacing from a difficult time. The senior management I had joined some nine years earlier had left, and I had a decision to make,’ he says. ‘With hindsight, it was very much the correct decision and I moved into management in April 2001.’ The rest, as they say, is history.

‘Having been with the firm for so many years, I share, at least in part, some of the firm’s heritage, which comes from over 160 years of history,’ he says.

The proof? ‘I still act for clients today that I was first involved with back in my early days having served them from one generation to the next.’
