Anna Worwood

A leading authority on relocation, Anna Worwood is something of a perfectionist. ‘I always aim for the best in my work,’ she tells Spear’s, outlining that this means clients must not only receive a truly ‘first class’ service, but also a lawyer who is prepared to strive for their best outcome ‘whatever the circumstances. I want my clients know they can trust me to guide and support them through what can be one of the most traumatic and difficult experiences of their lives.’

Despite her focus on client service, she is well aware that getting the best result can often mean being frank with her clients and ensuring they don’t act against their own interests. ‘I will always provide my clients with strong advice, even if it isn’t necessarily what they want to hear,’ she says.

The highly regarded lawyer began her career at Manches in 2001, rising to partner within five years. When the firm merged to become Penningtons Manches in 2013, she became a crucial part of one of London’s fastest growing family teams, with a knack for complex relocation cases. As well as arguing in a number of reported cases concerning child relocation (including Re C, in which the High Court ruled there should be no difference in the treatment of internal and international relocation cases), Worwood co-wrote the first comprehensive guide to the subject.

Having earned a seat at the top table, Worwood hopes her example will serve as encouragement to younger women entering the field.

‘I want to inspire my junior female colleagues to have confidence that they can “have it all”,’ she says. ‘Which, in my case, has meant combining working as a highly-regarded lawyer in a top-ranked family firm with raising a family of my own.’

As a relatively junior lawyer, she was approached by a third party on behalf of an UHNW client looking to instruct an international family lawyer. Ten years later, Worwood has become a trusted adviser to the client, even attending an ‘unforgettable’ birthday party in Ibiza.

Of course, not all clients are looking for long-term working relationships, and sometimes the best result is providing clients with the necessary closure so that they can finally get on with their lives. Worwood gives a recent example of the latter. After years of working on a case involving complex legal issues, numerous jurisdictions, and sophisticated financial structures, she was finally able to help an elderly client agree a substantial settlement. It was a win, she says, that took ‘years of persistence’ – and probably a healthy dose of that famous perfectionism, too.
