James d'Aquino

‘I am lucky that I have worked with so many of my clients for several years,’ says James d’Aquino. ‘It’s that rapport and long-standing relationship, often over multiple generations, that makes the job so rewarding.’ A partner in the London private client team of Penningtons Manches Cooper, d’Aquino acts for HNWs, family offices and banks on issues relating to wills and succession planning, as well as international tax issues. Having previously worked for a leading law firm in Geneva, he has extensive experience of advising UK-based clients on regularising their tax affairs, including the Liechtenstein Disclosure Facility and the application of the Swiss-UK Tax Cooperation Agreement.

‘When a client approaches me for the first time, they are usually concerned about something,’ he says. ‘That might be the impact of new legislation, how to structure their affairs to move to the UK, or how best to provide for their family or structure their business venture.’ D’Aquino gives his clients ‘peace of mind’, by considering their aims, their circumstances and the relevant legal and tax frameworks to find a ‘complete solution’ to their situation. He’s spent the past year supporting a handful of UHNW families, often working across overlapping issues of law to deal with contentious and tricky issues. ‘I find myself working more than ever with fellow experts on property, immigration, employment or family law,’ he says. ‘Being able to meet clients’ needs in a seamless manner is a high point for the firm.’
