‘As a private client lawyer, my clients are trusting me with their personal lives,’ says Sangna Chauhan, a partner at Charles Russell Speechlys. ‘I recognise this as a huge privilege and, in return, I provide clear and elegant advice.’
Specialising in tax and succession planning for UK and international clients, Chauhan’s current practice focuses on both HNW and UHNW families. She has particular experience of US-UK estate and tax planning, and has acted for many clients exposed to both countries’ tax and estate planning regimes.
The nature of her advice very much depends on the client themselves. ‘Sometimes this will be simple: clients will come to me with a straightforward request, and I will use the law to deliver,’ she says. ‘At other times, it will be anything but simple: I will work with the client to identify their goals, use my network to ensure that they are speaking to the right people and provide creative and innovative solutions.’
Chauhan’s interest in cross-border succession planning was born of working on her first ‘multi-billion, multi-jurisdiction’ probate case. ‘Winning the pitch on my first big client was really gratifying,’ she adds. It’s the same thrill she now gets when working with UHNW clients on their tax strategy and international estate planning.
An expert on inheritance tax treaties, Chauhan also contributes the related chapter to the latest edition of Clarke’s Offshore Tax Planning.
