Richard Kershaw

A defining moment in Richard Kershaw’s career was winning an appeal in the House of Lords when he was newly qualified, acting on a legal aid certificate. Recently, he was instructed on ‘probably the largest claim under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975’,which he hopes to settle at mediation. He has certainly come a long way since being made a Partner in the family and dispute resolution team at Hunters Law in 2003, honing considerable expertise on a wide range of financial and child related disputes arising on the breakdown of a relationship. His primary aim is to steer his clients through these difficult and unpleasant patches in their lives with ‘dignity’, as well as getting them out the other side ‘with their financial future certain’. The expertise of Hunters lawyers is reflected in the department ranking as one of London’s best family law teams. Kershaw specialises in representing individuals in difficult family circumstances, working with clients to protect their wealth, whether this be through a well-drafted pre-nuptial agreement or tackling a complex and high value case. Indeed, he is frequently instructed to obtain injunctions, both financial and for his clients’ personal protection.

As well as family, Hunters Law has also ‘maintained a leading reputation providing tax, trust and succession planning advice’ for 300 years. Although all of his work involves relationship-generated disputes, Kershaw also draws on expertise in trusts, overseas assets, property ownership and company structures. In addition to his work in the family department, he also has a complementary litigation practice with a focus on relationship-generated trust and inheritance act disputes.

He is regularly instructed in the High Court to help clients solve contentious will and trust problems, whether acting for trustees, beneficiaries or executors, as well as in complex, high value cases involving private equity and hedge funds, onshore and offshore trusts, and landed estates. He also acted for the wife in the widely reported case of B v B. A mere glance at Kershaw’s track record reveals why he is an indispensable part of an operation that has inspired families to stick with the firm for multiple generations, and that continues to attract new clients. According to the firm: ‘The number of clients who have chosen to instruct us for the first time in recent years also reflects our pre-eminent position in the field of Private Client law.’

Accolades from the industry confirm Kershaw’s ability. He has been described as ‘brilliant, insightful, pragmatic and knowledgeable’ by Legal 500 2020.‘He identifies strategies from the outset and gives clear and fair advice so clients feel part of a supportive team throughout.’
