Jo Carr-West

Family solicitor Jo Carr-West specialises in the complex financial aspects of divorce proceedings such as inherited assets, trusts and company law, as well as advising on wealth protection pre-marriage, and claims arising between cohabiting couples. She is also experienced in arrangements for children, including in cases of domestic violence where safeguarding measures are required. Whatever she turns her hand to, she aims to achieve her clients’ goals. ‘At the start of the case we sit down together and discuss their priorities,’ she says. ‘I then steer the case accordingly, using the processes and approaches that will get them where they want to be with a bespoke strategy.’

Having joined Hunters Law on qualification in 2004, Carr-West was quickly recognised for her creativity, solutions-focused approach, sensitivity and pragmatism. ‘No two cases are the same, and a creative approach enables me to find solutions in seemingly intractable cases,’ she says. ‘It recognises the diversity of clients’ experiences and priorities.’ She became a Partner in the family department in 2016, and is a specialist in the issues surrounding family breakdown including trust interests and businesses on divorce, financial provision in children law and disputes concerning children.

Using non-court resolutions such as mediation or arbitration can really help with finding solutions, she says. ‘Training as a mediator in 2011 was pivotal to my career development. The insight I gained into negotiation theory, power dynamics and emotional processing brought an additional dimension to my approach. Having a mediation side to my practice enhances my negotiation and communication expertise, meaning good relationships with clients and cases culminating in effective settlements.’ Law Society-accredited in the practice of mediation (as well as being a trained collaborative lawyer), she is also a successful litigator when the situation calls.

As well as running a busy mediation practice, Carr-West is an active member of Resolution, and sits as a member of Resolution’s Property, Tax and Financial Remedies Committee. Her achievements are recognised by the industry at large; Carr-West is listed in both Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners, noted as an ‘Up and Coming’ lawyer in the latter. She was also named Woman of the Year at the Citywealth Powerwomen Awards 2020, as well as being ‘Recommended’ in ‘Family’ and named a ‘Leading Individual’ in ‘Family: Mediation’ in Legal 500 2021. She also boasts a band 4 ranking for Family/Matrimonial in Chambers & Partners 2021.
