Description

Spear's Review

‘I am almost the fourth emergency service,’ says family law specialist Claire O’Flinn. ‘Clients call me when they need urgent help. Sometimes this is because it is a legal emergency, and sometimes because it is an emotional one – and I treat them both with the same respect and importance.’ In recent years, O’Flinn has seen a rise in disputes concerning children. ‘More often, it’s a dispute years after separation,’ she explains. ‘“Parental alienation” is a buzz term, and children cases involving more than one jurisdiction are also on the rise.’

O’Flinn’s calibre comes into its own with UHNW financial settlements. Highlights from the last year include acting for an entrepreneurial wife who is the sole director of a company worth over £50 million. O’Flinn brought in a team of Keystone colleagues to include corporate, property, restructuring, litigation, immigration and private client advice, while she took the lead on the divorce in tandem with mediation. The partner has also acted for a wife in a divorce with assets in excess of £20 million, including properties in London and four other European countries. ‘Court proceedings were issued, but thankfully we were able to reach a consensual agreement through solicitor negotiations as to the division of the assets and avoided weighty and expensive court proceedings,’ says O’Flinn. She is seeing an increase in clients needing advice to vary financial consent orders as a result of the economic crisis caused by Covid-19, including one high-profile music industry client and one City financier. Some clients were advised by O’Flinn in their original settlement; others chose her over their previous solicitors because of her reputation for securing outcomes.

O’Flinn’s career began in 1999, while temping as a legal secretary for City of York Council to fund her Politics MA. ‘A solicitor told me how she had converted to law after completing her degree in English,’ O’Flinn says. ‘I continued to temp while I studied, which gave me a unique appreciation of the role of support staff. I know what can be done, and in what time frame.’ Known among her peers for her calm, diligent approach, O’Flinn is highly appreciated by clients. ‘Words that come to mind are “patient”, “persistent” and “generous with her time”,’ enthuses one, while another praises her for ‘making a difficult process much more bearable.’

‘Realising that I’m a trusted advisor probably came years after I actually was one,’ she says. ‘When you realise the great settlements are reached because of your skill, your knowledge and your capability, it begins to dawn on you that maybe you have the knack!’

Adviser Profile

Family law specialist Claire O'Flinn, Partner, joined Keystone Law in 2013 and in the last eight years has grown her team to 7 members.

To her clients she simply is the fourth emergency service. Her clients call when they need urgent help. Whether it be a legal emergency or an emotional one, Claire is always ready to pull out all the stops, achieving outstanding results often in very difficult circumstances.

Claire’s client base is mostly made up from ultra-high-net-worth and high-net-worth individuals who often have very complex financial and family situations. Claire’s years of experience and technical know-how, compassion and determination to achieve the best outcome are of great comfort to her clients.

Claire has also been witnessing the continued effect of Brexit first-hand. She recently achieved a substantial settlement for a wife who jointly owned an agricultural company and properties with her husband. During the divorce he tried to claim she was a partner in name only in the business. This was something Claire disputed successfully and also managed to locate a pension that the husband had failed to disclose!

Known among her peers for her calm yet diligent approach, and for being hugely capable and really adding value to her cases, Claire is also highly appreciated by clients. ‘Words that come to mind are patient, persistent and generous with her time,’ enthuses one, while another praises her for ‘making a difficult process much more bearable’.

‘For me, realising that I'm a trusted advisor probably came years after I actually was one,’ admits O'Flinn. ‘When you realise that the great settlements are reached because of your skill, your knowledge and your capability, it begins to dawn on you that maybe you have the knack!’
