Kim Marshall

Kim Marshall has practised in the field of family law for over 20 years, including a period at Mishcon de Reya, before joining Keystone Law in 2016. ‘To be a really good family lawyer, you need to have an interest in the psychology of people – what makes them tick and how they think,’ she says. ‘I pride myself on being a good listener and am interested in getting to know my clients so I can understand what they want to achieve, rather than having a pre-existing agenda. Experience has taught me that it’s important to be straightforward and honest at the outset about what I can and can’t achieve for a client.’

Marshall feels it central to the role of a family lawyer to accept and confront that divorce is ‘one of life’s most stressful events’. Her own divorce changed her approach to her work, as it enabled her to gain a deeper understanding of the difficult journey her clients undertake. Marshall is so committed to what is best for her clients on their journey through divorce that she recommends other specialist advisers such as therapists, where necessary.

The emotional impact of family law also extends to lawyers themselves, an issue that is becoming increasingly recognised within the profession. Marshall is ‘delighted’ to be amongst the first family lawyers to train in Family Law Supervision, which enables her to support others in their day-to-day practice. Marshall’s reputation in the field among clients and co-workers alike is one of empathy and warmth, but she also mixes these qualities with astuteness, tenacity, pragmatism and a results-driven focus. She has a formidable breadth of experience, and provides legal expertise for clients who primarily consist of HNW individuals, senior management professionals, business owners, entrepreneurs and international clients.

Marshall specialises in financial settlements on relationship breakdown, often involving complex trust and tax issues, pre- and post-marital agreements, cohabitation and separation agreements and disputes concerning children. A regular article contributor who speaks at industry conferences, she co-authored Family Law Factbook and is also a member of Resolution, a community of family justice professionals working to resolve issues in a non-confrontational way.

Marshall successfully acted for a spouse with an extensive art collection, reaching a creative solution to division of assets on divorce. She has also acted for a wife whose husband had assumed several identities in a number of countries, and a husband whose spouse had a severe mental health condition, necessitating sensitive handling to achieve a financial settlement.
