Lee Ellis

Whether he’s advising corporate giants or fresh-faced sports stars, tax litigator Lee Ellis’ approach is simple. ‘My goal is to help clients understand what they want to achieve, and then provide a clear strategy on the relevant aspects of tax law,’ he says.

Client management is, as you’d expect, a priority, with Ellis seeking to bring all new clients up-to-speed as quickly as possible on the potential consequences of being in dispute with HMRC. Only then, he says, can they decide how to progress.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the former HMRC insider cites his decision to go private as a pivotal moment in his career. Having worked as government lawyer for nine years, Ellis had originally encountered David Pickstone – who would eventually recruit him to Stewarts – on the other side of the table. Since then, the two have built one of the largest tax disputes teams in the City, with five partners – up from two in 2015 – and two tax directors. ‘Our aim is to provide a complete dispute resolution service all the way from enquiry to settlements and appeals,’ says Ellis.

Recent wins have included defending a large waste management company from claims of some £30 million for overpaid landfill tax, as well as helping a number of HNWIs to resolve complex disputes with HMRC.

Ellis insists that the very nature of the practice means that quality is imperative. ‘As a litigation-only firm, we don’t have legacy relationships with firms we’re already advising,’ he says. ‘All of our work is driven by us, or referred to us by others who rate us.’
